NBA Star LeBron James wears Black and White ‘Equality’ shoes in protest against Donald Trump
NBA star LeBron James made a powerful statement both on and off the court as he stepped on the court in Washington DC earlier this month
Not because of his third straight triple-double but rather his decision to wear one black and one white Nike trainer, both with the word equality stitched at the back
Cleveland Cavaliers forward James has been among the most politically vocal players in basketball over recent years, labelling Donald Trump a “bum” on Twitter after the President withdrew the customary invitation to the White House that would have been handed to last season’s NBA champions, the Golden State Warriors.
“We all know where we are right now, and we know who is at the helm here,” James said after the Cavaliers’ 106-99 win over the Washington Wizards.
“Us as Americans, no matter the skin colour, no matter the race, no matter who you are, I think we all have to understand that having equal rights and being able to stand for something and speak for something and keeping the conversation going [is important].”
“Equality is all about understanding our rights, understanding what we stand for and how powerful we are as men and women, black or white or Hispanic.
“It doesn’t matter your race, whatever the case may be, this is a beautiful country, and we’re never going to let one person dictate how beautiful and how powerful we are.
James wore a similar pair of the shoes – the LeBron 15 Equality PE – in the season’s opening game against the Boston Celtics, though both of those were black as a response to the pre-game protests of NFL players against Trump.
Despite the powerful message, James opted to change out of the shoes at half-time after making only four of his first 12 shots. He would go on to score 20 points, adding 12 rebounds and 15 assists for his sixth triple-double of the year.
